Best Time to Visit India
For many first-time international visitors, October to March is a good general window for exploring India’s popular northern cities and historic attractions.
- October–November: Conditions often become more comfortable after the summer and monsoon, although early October can still be hot in some places.
- December–February: Generally favourable for sightseeing in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Rajasthan, but winter mornings can be cold or foggy.
- March: Often a useful month for travel, though temperatures begin rising, particularly later in the month.
These months are not perfect everywhere. Southern coastal regions can remain warm and humid, while Himalayan destinations have their own seasonal conditions.
Worst Time to Visit India
There is no single worst time for every part of India. However, the following periods can be difficult for travellers planning extensive outdoor sightseeing in the northern plains.
April to June: Extreme Summer Heat
April brings rising temperatures, while May and June can be particularly hot in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and other northern or central destinations.
Walking around forts, monuments, markets and busy streets can become exhausting in intense heat. If you travel during this period, plan outdoor activities early in the morning, take regular breaks and avoid overloading your itinerary.
June to September: Monsoon Rain and Humidity
The monsoon brings rainfall and humid conditions to many parts of India, although its timing and intensity vary by region.
Heavy rain can affect road journeys, outdoor sightseeing and travel schedules. However, monsoon is not universally a bad time to visit: it can bring beautiful green landscapes, waterfalls and fewer tourists in some destinations.
Travel tip: If your main goal is comfortable sightseeing across Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, the cooler months are usually a more practical choice than peak summer or the wettest part of the monsoon.
Best Time to Visit Delhi, Agra and Jaipur
For the Golden Triangle route, October to March is generally the most convenient season for exploring historic monuments, local markets and cultural attractions.
Delhi and Jaipur can be extremely hot before the monsoon. Agra’s outdoor attractions can also be challenging during peak heat.
Winter has its own considerations: fog can affect early-morning visibility and transport, and Delhi may experience poor air quality. Check local conditions before planning a sunrise visit or a tightly scheduled journey.

Real Experiences from Our Delhi Tours
At Ar India Tour, we have seen how summer weather can affect visitors during real sightseeing experiences in Delhi.
A client who chose to return to the hotel
One client booked a Delhi sightseeing tour during the peak summer heat. After visiting only one or two attractions, the client found the conditions too uncomfortable and asked to return to the hotel rather than continue the tour.
A couple who ended their full-day tour early
Another couple booked a full-day Delhi tour with us. They explored Old Delhi in the morning, but as the day approached around 11 a.m. to noon, the heat became increasingly uncomfortable.
While visiting the area around Rashtrapati Bhavan, they bought several bottles of cold water despite our having cool drinking water in the car. The guide was also working in the same hot conditions.
The couple eventually decided they did not want to visit more attractions and asked to be dropped back at their hotel.
These experiences show why a full-day booking does not always mean a full day of sightseeing will feel comfortable during extreme heat.
Our advice: Choose your travel season carefully, start early if travelling in summer, stay hydrated and keep your plans flexible. A private tour allows greater flexibility, but it cannot eliminate the risks of extreme weather.
