Taj Mahal
Built by Shah Jahan between 1632 and 1653 as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal is white Makrana marble inlaid with jade, carnelian, lapis lazuli and turquoise in a technique called pietra dura.

- Go at sunrise. The gates open about 30 minutes before sunrise. The first hour is the coolest, quietest and best light of the entire day.

Agra Fort
A red sandstone fortress-city 2.5 km from the Taj, and the seat of Mughal power before Delhi. Shah Jahan spent his final years imprisoned here by his son Aurangzeb, with a view of the Taj Mahal from the Musamman Burj.

Baby Taj (Itimad-ud-Daulah)

Fatehpur Sikri
Akbar's abandoned capital, 40 km west of Agra and a UNESCO site in its own right. Built in 1571 and left behind within 15 years, reputedly for lack of water. The Buland Darwaza gateway, Panch Mahal and Jama Masjid are remarkably intact.
Allow 2 to 2.5 hours including the drive. Best added on the way from Agra to Jaipur rather than squeezed into a Delhi day trip.
Local Markets

The catch is timing: departures are morning, so you arrive after sunrise, and you still need transport and a guide once in Agra. Book early — seats sell out, especially in season. Trains do not run every day of the week.
Group coach — the option we advise against
It is the cheapest number on the page and the most common source of bad Agra reviews. Late departures, 4–5 hours each way with stops, mid-morning arrival in heat and crowds, and mandatory shopping halts that eat two hours of your day.

Food in Agra
Agra's food is Mughlai at its core — slow-cooked meat, rich gravies, breads from a tandoor — layered with Uttar Pradesh street food and one very famous sweet.

- Leather — Agra is one of India's biggest leather producers; shoes, bags and jackets.
- Zari and zardozi embroidery — metallic thread work on textiles.
- Carpets and dhurries — hand-knotted, with wide price and quality ranges.
- Petha and dalmoth — the edible souvenirs.
How not to get caught out:
- Ask whether it is real marble or alabaster/soapstone. Real marble is heavier, cooler to the touch and translucent when a torch is held against it. A genuine workshop will demonstrate this happily.
- Never accept an unrequested shopping stop. If a driver insists, that is commission at work, not hospitality.
- Bargain in markets, not in fixed-price government emporiums. Half the opening price is a normal starting point in a bazaar.
- Get an export invoice for anything expensive, and ask about shipping before you pay.
- Skip "gemstone investment" pitches entirely. This is a long-running scam across North India.

Two seasonal notes: December and January mornings in Agra can be genuinely foggy, which occasionally delays that perfect first sight of the Taj — the fog usually lifts by 09:00. And the Taj Mahal is at its most crowded during Indian public holidays and the Christmas–New Year week, so plan sunrise entry on those dates without exception.

Common Mistakes First-Time Visitors Make
- Visiting on a Friday. The Taj Mahal is closed. Check your date before booking flights or trains.
- Arriving mid-morning. Peak heat, peak crowds and flat light, all at once.
- Booking the cheapest group tour. The saving is real; so are the five hours of coach time and forced shopping stops.
- Giving Agra only three hours. Agra Fort and Baby Taj are not filler; skipping them is the most common regret we hear.
