Why Visit the Taj Mahal?

The Taj Mahal is one of the most admired architectural masterpieces in the world and is widely regarded as the finest example of Mughal architecture. Built in the 17th century by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, the monument combines Persian, Indian, and Islamic design traditions into a breathtaking work of art.

Visitors from around the globe come not only to admire its famous white marble façade but also to experience its peaceful gardens, intricate stone inlay work, symmetrical design, and fascinating history. Every season and every time of day offers a different perspective, making each visit unique.

Whether you are passionate about history, architecture, photography, or simply exploring iconic destinations, the Taj Mahal deserves a place on every travel itinerary.

Where is the Taj Mahal?

The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, a historic city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Approximate travel times:

  • Delhi → 3–4 hours by expressway

  • Delhi → 90–120 minutes by superfast train

  • Jaipur → 4–5 hours

  • Agra Airport → approximately 20 minutes

Because of its convenient location, the Taj Mahal can easily be visited as a day trip from Delhi or as part of the famous Golden Triangle route covering Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the right time can greatly improve your experience.

October to March

This is considered the most comfortable season, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies. It's also the busiest period, so arriving early is recommended.

April to June

These months are significantly warmer. If visiting during summer, plan to arrive shortly after sunrise to avoid the midday heat.

July to September

The monsoon season transforms the gardens into lush greenery and often brings fewer crowds. While occasional rain showers are possible, many travelers enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Sunrise or Sunset?

Many travelers ask whether sunrise or sunset offers the better experience.

Sunrise is ideal for cooler temperatures, softer light, and generally smaller crowds. It's especially popular with photographers and first-time visitors.

Sunset provides a warm golden glow over the marble and is perfect for those staying overnight in Agra, although visitor numbers are often higher later in the day.

If your schedule allows, sunrise remains the top recommendation.

Opening Hours

The Taj Mahal welcomes visitors every day except Friday.

Opening Time: Sunrise

Closing Time: Sunset

Friday: Closed for general sightseeing.

Night Viewing: Limited night viewing is available on selected full moon nights and nearby dates, subject to official availability and advance booking.

How Much Time Should You Allow?

Most visitors spend around two to three hours exploring the monument and gardens. If you enjoy photography or wish to take a guided tour, allow additional time to fully appreciate the experience.

Visiting nearby attractions such as Agra Fort and Itmad-ud-Daulah (often called the Baby Taj) can easily turn your trip into a full-day exploration of Agra.
