Worst Time to Visit Taj Mahal: Months, Days and Hours
Most pages tell you the best time for the Taj Mahal. A local guide explains when to avoid it: summer heat, Fridays, winter fog and more.

Short answer: summer, Fridays and foggy winter mornings
The worst time to visit the Taj Mahal is summer, when the heat is hard to bear and it is still crowded. Two other times can ruin a visit: Fridays, when the Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors, and foggy winter mornings, when you may not see the tomb at all.
Most pages online tell you the best time. This one tells you what to avoid, from a Delhi-born guide who works in Delhi and Agra. We say clearly which points come from our own work and which come from official sources, and where we simply do not know.

At a glance: what goes wrong, and when
| Problem | When | What happens | Where this comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extreme heat and crowds | Summer | Too hot for most people, and still crowded, so it is not worth it | Our own work |
| Closed to general visitors | Every Friday | You cannot go in for general viewing | Official Taj Mahal website |
| Closed on Eid | Eid days | We have found it closed | Our own work; not stated on the official page we read |
| Fog | Winter mornings | At sunrise you may not see the tomb | Our own work |
| Rain | Monsoon | Rainy weather | Our own work; details not known |
We have kept this table short on purpose. Where we do not have solid information, we say so below.
Summer: too hot, and still crowded
From our own work: summer is the worst time for the Taj Mahal. It is so hot that even local people cannot stand it, and yet many visitors still come, so it is crowded as well. Hot and crowded together make it not worth it.
This is also what we tell our guests about Delhi and Agra in general: summer is not a good idea. We have seen guests struggle with the heat, including red skin and tiredness.
We do not know what the shade or the marble feels like inside the complex in summer, so we will not guess. We also have not listed Agra temperature figures, because we could not verify them from an official table.
If you must go in summer, the Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise, so the early hours are the only sensible time.
Winter fog: you can go at sunrise and still not see the tomb
From our own work: in winter, fog can be so thick that if you go at sunrise you cannot see the tomb. Sunrise is the time most guides recommend, so this surprises many guests.
If fog is forecast, a later start is worth thinking about. We do not have exact figures for how often fog hides the Taj Mahal or what time it usually clears, and we will not invent them. Check the forecast the night before.
Fog is a bigger problem for travel than for sightseeing in the wider region. Our Worst Time to Visit Delhi guide shows the official fog figures for Delhi and a real fog day when 128 flights were cancelled.
Fridays and other closed days
Fridays. According to the official Taj Mahal website, "Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays for general viewing. Other days it is always open." Plan your Agra day around it, because arriving on a Friday means you will not get in.
Opening hours. The same page says the Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset on normal operating days. Ticket counters run from one hour before sunrise until 45 minutes before sunset.
Eid. From our own work, the Taj Mahal is also closed on Eid. The official visiting-hours page we read does not mention Eid or other holiday closures, so we cannot confirm it from an official source. Please check the official website close to your dates.
The official page we read shows no date, so check it again before you travel.
Monsoon: rain, and what we do not know
From our own work: the monsoon brings rain. We are not sure how much it changes the experience at the Taj Mahal, and we have not seen enough to say it is a bad time or a good one.
Some websites say the monument has "occasional closures" in heavy rain. We could not confirm that from an official source, so we do not repeat it as fact.
For general weather in the region, see our Worst Time to Visit India guide.
If you have to go in a bad time
- Summer: go at the opening hour, and keep the rest of the day for rest indoors.
- Winter: check the fog forecast the night before. If fog is thick, a later start may give you a better chance of seeing the tomb.
- Friday: do not plan the Taj Mahal for that day. Move it to another day of your Agra stay.
- Eid: check the official website close to your dates before you plan.
A local guide can help you change the plan on the day, but no guide can change the weather or open a closed gate.
